Videodance Performance with Karen Lugo

On July 5, Flamenco Nómada presents a unique event at ICAM – L’Olivier with Mexican artist Karen Lugo. On this occasion, she offers a singular evening where flamenco resonates with videodance, in an artistic approach that is both exploratory and evolving.

“Este encuentro” is an invitation to dive into a constantly transforming universe, where the language of flamenco is reimagined through moving images. The artist will present a selection of her own audiovisual works, along with pieces by other artists who, like her, experiment with this emerging discipline.

Some of the works will be accompanied by live performances, where the body engages in real-time dialogue with video and sound, opening up new layers of meaning. The evening will conclude with a conversation between the artist and the audience, offering space to share creative processes, reflections, and questions.

A rare opportunity to experience a contemporary, hybrid, and deeply alive form of flamenco.

    Josemi Carmona, is a multifaceted musician and a key figure in the fusion of flamenco with world music. Son of the master Pepe Habichuela, he began his career at an early age, standing out for the delicacy of his melodies and his fusion with jazz, salsa, bossa nova, and even mandinga music. At 14, he joined Ketama, a group that became a cornerstone of flamenco fusion, praised by both critics and audiences.After 20 years with Ketama, Josemi Carmona sought his essence as a solo guitarist. He recorded "Sumando" with Carles Benavent, "Hands" with Pepe Habichuela and Dave Holland, and later released "Las Pequeñas Cosas," nominated for the 2011 Latin Grammy for "Best Flamenco Album." In 2016, along with Javier Colina and Bandolero, he presented "De Cerca," followed by "De Cerca en Directo" in 2017. In 2022, he released "VIDA."

    José Ruiz "Bandolero" is a flamenco percussionist who began his career at a very young age, accompanying prominent flamenco dancers such as Antonio Canales, Joaquín Cortés, Joaquín Grilo, Javier Barón, Manuela Vargas, Merche Esmeralda, Sara Baras, Farru, and José Maya. He became part of Joaquín Cortés’ company, touring some of the world’s most famous venues, including Radio City Music Hall (New York), Royal Albert Hall (London), and the Opera House (Sydney). In 2002, together with Ramón Porrinas, he founded "Echegaray", the first flamenco percussion group, which released the album "Calle Echegaray". Throughout his career, Bandolero has performed with flamenco legends such as Enrique Morente, Tomatito, Vicente Amigo, and Pepe Habichuela. He has also collaborated with musicians blending other styles with flamenco, such as Antonio Serrano, Chano Domínguez, Jorge Pardo, Tino di Geraldo, Larry Coryell, Carles Benavent, Rubem Dantas, Dave Holland, Pat Metheny, La Barbería del Sur, Ketama, and Niña Pastori.
