Videodance Performance with Karen Lugo
On July 5, Flamenco Nómada presents a unique event at ICAM – L’Olivier with Mexican artist Karen Lugo. On this occasion, she offers a singular evening where flamenco resonates with videodance, in an artistic approach that is both exploratory and evolving.
“Este encuentro” is an invitation to dive into a constantly transforming universe, where the language of flamenco is reimagined through moving images. The artist will present a selection of her own audiovisual works, along with pieces by other artists who, like her, experiment with this emerging discipline.
Some of the works will be accompanied by live performances, where the body engages in real-time dialogue with video and sound, opening up new layers of meaning. The evening will conclude with a conversation between the artist and the audience, offering space to share creative processes, reflections, and questions.
A rare opportunity to experience a contemporary, hybrid, and deeply alive form of flamenco.

Alberto García is one of the most prominent voices in contemporary flamenco in France. He has performed alongside renowned singers such as Curro Fernández and El Extremeño, and collaborated with celebrated dancers including Rafael de Carmen, Andrés Peña, Ana Morales, and Pedro Córdoba. His versatility extends to guitarists like Oscar Lago, Jesús Guerrero, and Canito. He has shared the stage with flamenco legends like Manuel Agujetas, El Cigala, and Inés Bacán, and opened for icons such as El Grilo. He is also known for fusing flamenco with other musical traditions, including Indian music, in projects like "Inde Fusion" and "Gipsy Connection." Alberto has participated in significant theatrical productions, including "Yerma" at the Comédie Française, and Questcequetudeviens?, nominated for the Olivier Awards. His collaborations include the duo Scarlatti / Chant Flamenco with pianist Alexandre Tharaud and the jazz album Caja Negra by Pierre Bertrand. He is currently touring with "Jaleo: For Paco", a tribute to Paco de Lucía by Louis Winsberg.
Enrique Bermudez "Piculabe", a flamenco singer born in Madrid, he began his musical career in the choir of the Evangelical Church. Through a recording that made waves in flamenco communities, he met Juan José Suarez "Paquete," recorded his first track, and signed with Universal Music. He has collaborated with renowned international artists such as Jorge Pardo and Tomatito, and his discography includes "Camino y tiempo" (2008) and "Canta y sueña" (2012). Since 2012, he has been invited by the Antonio Gades company for various performances worldwide, appearing in prestigious venues like the National Theatre of Beijing and the Roman Theatre of Verona. In 2014, guitarist Juan Carmona invited him to join his international tour.
Illeana Gómez, a mexican flamenco dancer born in New Mexico, Illeana Gómez is a flamenco dancer with a Master of Fine Arts degree. She trained with esteemed artists such as Juana Amaya, José Maya, and Farruquito across Spain. She has participated in prominent dance competitions and performed in prestigious theaters and festivals, including the Joyce Theatre in New York and Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. In 2010, she became the first student in the U.S. to earn a master’s degree in dance with a specialization in flamenco. She currently works in Madrid’s tablaos, performing alongside major flamenco artists.
Macarena Mulero, a flamenco dancer born in Murcia, she began dancing at the age of five. In 1998, she won second prize at the dance competition in Ribarroja, Valencia. As an adult, she trained in Granada with renowned teachers such as Mariquilla, Manuel Liñán, Juana Amaya, and Alfonso Losa. In 2008, she won first prize at the XIII Dance Festival of Torres de Cotillas in Murcia. In 2011, she moved to Barcelona, where she danced and taught flamenco for six years, collaborating with artists like Karime Amaya and "El Yiyo." In 2017, she reached the semifinals at the International Festival Cante de las Minas in La Unión. Currently, she works in various tablaos in Granada and has been teaching at the Carmen de las Cuevas flamenco school since 2018.
Karen Lugo, a Mexican flamenco dancer and choreographer, she is renowned for her deep respect for flamenco tradition. She has collaborated with major artists like Pepe Habichuela, Jorge Pardo, Carles Benavent and Silvia Pérez Cruz. Karen has won several prestigious awards for her choreography, including at the Spring Film Festival in Barcelona and the International Festival of Almería. In collaboration with José Maldonado, she created the show "Fronteras" for the Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana company, which toured in the United States. Her latest work, "Golpe de Tierra", was nominated for the Premis de la Crítica d’Arts Escèniques in the Best Solo Show category. She is currently a choreographer and performer in Juan Gómez Chicuelo's production.
Antonio Perujo, born in Lausanne, is a Swiss dancer and choreographer specializing in flamenco. He began his training in flamenco and classical Spanish dance at a young age before dedicating himself entirely to flamenco. He opened a Flamenco Dance Academy in Lausanne and Geneva, where he trained many dancers and created several acclaimed productions, including Minotauro, Passion Flamenca, and Sigue mi Compás. In 2004, he focused on founding the International Flamenco Festival of Geneva. Today, he runs his flamenco studio in Bern and teaches across Switzerland and Europe. He is the only one in Switzerland to teach all the disciplines of flamenco dance. Antonio Perujo has also created a trilogy of productions titled Negro, Rojo, and Blanco, which explore different dimensions of this art form. He is currently dedicating himself to organizing a new event, the Berner Flamenco Festival, in Bern.
Rebeca Castilla is a dancer, choreographer, and cultural promoter deeply rooted in flamenco tradition. Trained in classical dance, modern jazz, and music at the Geneva Conservatory, she devoted herself entirely to flamenco after formative years with Bernardo Méndez and later Antonio Perujo, who remains her mentor. She further honed her skills with renowned Spanish and international artists, including Eva la Yerbabuena, Antonio El Pipa, Lola Greco, José Granero, Fuensanta La Moneta, Macarena Mulero, Karen Lugo, Javier Latorre, Concha Jareño, and Chiqui de Jerez, training in Seville, Granada, and Geneva. Rebeca has performed at prestigious events such as the International Flamenco Festival of Geneva, the Flamenco Biennale of Pully, and the Teatro de Carlos V in Madrid. She premiered her first personal creation, "EnSueños", in 2012, followed by "Flamenco pour Caméléons" in 2014. In 2013, she founded l’Association pour la Création & Culture Flamenca Flamenco-Genève, an association dedicated to promoting flamenco culture through performances, workshops, and community projects. Since 2016, Rebeca has been the programmer for Soleil Rouge, Geneva’s premier tablao. She also leads the Cie Flamenco-Genève and continues to innovate with projects such as her podcast "Arsa y Toma", which highlights discussions on flamenco. Rebeca shares her passion by inspiring a wide audience and teaching flamenco, bringing this art form to life on stage and through cultural and social initiatives.
José Carmona "Rapico", a flamenco dancer born in Palma de Mallorca believes that dance is his best form of expression. From a young age, his grandmother sang him soleás, sparking his love for flamenco. He began dancing at the age of three. His mentors include renowned artists such as Antonio Canales, Farruquito, José Maya, and Alfonso Losa. His dynamic personality has led him to create several original shows. His most recent works, "Rapikeando" and "Errante", were successfully performed at the Teatro Real and the prestigious Flamenco Festival of Torrelodones, along with his latest work, "Tabernero", which premiered at the Suma Flamenca in Madrid.
Antonio Serrano is a virtuoso harmonica player and a pioneer in introducing the harmonica into flamenco. His collaboration with Paco de Lucía's group (2004–2014) marked a significant turning point in his career. Beyond flamenco, he explores various musical genres such as jazz, classical music, tango, and pop, collaborating with internationally renowned artists. Among his many accolades are a Latin Grammy (2015), the Masters of Mediterranean Music in Flamenco Jazz from Berklee (2014), the Bernie Bray Award from SPAH (2020), and the San Javier International Jazz Festival Award (2024). As a soloist, he has performed with orchestras worldwide and has premiered original works for harmonica. Antonio is also a passionate educator, teaching at European conservatories and at Berklee College of Music. His albums, including "Harmonious", "Tootsology", and "Bach & 'Bach", have received critical acclaim. In 2021, music critic Luis Gago from El País praised him as one of the great geniuses of Spanish music.
Karime Amaya, flamenco dancer born in Mexico, is the grandniece of the legendary dancer Carmen Amaya. She made her debut at nine years old with her parents, dancer Mercedes Amaya "La Winy" and guitarist Santiago Aguilar. She won the Revelation Award at the Jerez Festival and starred in the documentary "Bajarí", nominated for Gaudí and Goya awards. Karime has performed at major festivals worldwide, including Mont-de-Marsan, Jerez, and Albuquerque. She has collaborated with renowned flamenco artists like Antonio Canales, Juan de Juan, and Farruquito. In 2012, she premiered her show "Desde la Orilla" at the Jerez Festival and has since performed in Europe and Japan. Karime has also graced prestigious tablaos such as Casa Patas, Las Carboneras, and Gitanerías in Mexico. Today, she continues to tour internationally, showcasing her powerful flamenco dance.
