Videodance Performance with Karen Lugo
On July 5, Flamenco Nómada presents a unique event at ICAM – L’Olivier with Mexican artist Karen Lugo. On this occasion, she offers a singular evening where flamenco resonates with videodance, in an artistic approach that is both exploratory and evolving.
“Este encuentro” is an invitation to dive into a constantly transforming universe, where the language of flamenco is reimagined through moving images. The artist will present a selection of her own audiovisual works, along with pieces by other artists who, like her, experiment with this emerging discipline.
Some of the works will be accompanied by live performances, where the body engages in real-time dialogue with video and sound, opening up new layers of meaning. The evening will conclude with a conversation between the artist and the audience, offering space to share creative processes, reflections, and questions.
A rare opportunity to experience a contemporary, hybrid, and deeply alive form of flamenco.

David Durán is a flamenco guitarist with a degree in History and Sciences of Music from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and a master’s in Composition for Audiovisual Media. He began playing guitar at a young age, receiving lessons from masters such as Rafael Riqueni and El Viejín. At 15, he obtained a diploma from the Centro de Arte Flamenco y Danza Española Amor de Dios and started his career performing in some of Madrid’s most iconic tablaos. In 2004, he began his career as a composer for dance companies like those of Antonio Márquez, Luis Ortega, and José Porcel, with whom he toured internationally (Japan, Brazil, the United States, China, etc.). He has collaborated with prestigious artists such as Antonio Canales, Arturo Sandoval, Rafael Amargo, and Isabel Pantoja. He is a flamenco guitar professor at the Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza Mariemma and has given lectures at renowned institutions such as the University of Washington. In 2021, he became a tenured professor of music and performing arts for the Community of Madrid. He continues to perform in Madrid's tablaos and works on composition projects for audiovisual media, as well as instrumental, theatrical, and dance projects.
Juan Debel is a flamenco singer who began his musical career at the age of ten. Since then, his artistic journey has been deeply connected to flamenco.He has traveled across Europe, America, Asia, and Africa, taking part in significant projects such as "Titanium" by Rojas & Rodríguez, "Sinergia" by Manuel Liñán, "Doy la cara" by José Mercé, "Son" by Nova Galega de Danza, "Enamorados Anónimos, El Musical" by Blanca Lí and Javier Limón, "Rew" by Daniel Doña and Manuel Liñán, "Mujer de pie" by Sara Cano, "Por si acaso amanece" and "Flamenco Algarabía" by José Barrios, and "Carmen" by Rafael Aguilar, among others. Since 2010, he has also been part of the most renowned flamenco tablao shows in Madrid, such as Casa Patas, Corral de la Morería, Las Tablas, and Villa Rosa. Juan Debel has composed, directed, and produced two studio albums in collaboration with guitarist Yerai Cortés, titled ‘01’ and ‘02’. He has also participated in numerous other discographic projects. Based in Madrid, he combines his role as an accompanying teacher at the Conservatorio Mariemma with his direction of the Tablao Flamenco "La Cueva de Lola".
Kike Terrón is a professional percussionist who began playing at the age of 14. From the very beginning, flamenco became his primary musical language, and he trained alongside some of the most prominent figures in flamenco singing, guitar, and dance. Driven by artistic curiosity and a deep passion for music, he went on to explore other genres, expanding his knowledge and enriching his style with influences from jazz and Cuban music. This versatility has made him a musician capable of navigating different styles while remaining rooted in flamenco tradition. Today, Kike Terrón is recognized as one of the leading figures in flamenco percussion in Spain. He has shared the stage with renowned artists from the flamenco, jazz, and Cuban music scenes, including Jorge Pardo, Niño Josele, and Alain Pérez, among others. He is currently focused on his personal project, 7xMedio, a fusion of flamenco and jazz, and is also a member of the band Compota de Manana, which explores contemporary Cuban music.
Esteve Pi, is an eminent drummer on the contemporary jazz scene. Born in Falset, Catalonia, Pi began studying drums at an early age and has played with some of the most important musicians in world jazz, such as Johnny Griffin, Phil Woods, and Benny Golson. His style is characterized by great improvisational ability and exceptional rhythmic dynamism. In "Tootsology", Pi provides a solid rhythmic foundation, allowing the rest of the group to express themselves freely while maintaining the cohesion of the performance.
Toño Miguel, is a Spanish double bassist and composer with an international career in the jazz scene. Throughout his career, he has played with great musicians such as Benny Golson, Paquito D'Rivera, and Perico Sambeat. He has also collaborated with renowned flamenco artists like Gerardo Núñez and Carmen Cortés. Miguel is recognized for his rhythmic solidity and his ability to provide a rich and dynamic harmonic foundation in his performances. In "Tootsology", he will be responsible for providing the harmonic and rhythmic foundation, allowing the musicians to freely explore improvisation.
Albert Sanz, is a unique pianist, known for his lyricism and inventiveness in jazz. Born in Valencia, Spain, Sanz combines a Spanish and South American musical foundation with a deep understanding of Afro-American jazz and European classical traditions. As a composer, he manages to make the old sound new. He has worked with renowned artists such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Perico Sambeat, Jorge Pardo, and Guillermo Klein. Sanz is also an acclaimed leader of his own projects and has released several albums, standing out for his ability to merge different musical influences. In "Tootsology", he brings his talent to the piano, completing the unique atmosphere that characterizes the tribute to Thielemans.
Rafita de Madrid is a flamenco singer from a family of artists, including figures such as Rafael Farina, Diego "El Cigala," José Peñagrande, and Pedro Jiménez "El Pili." From an early age, he developed a deep passion for music, and in 1997, he began performing in the main flamenco tablaos of Madrid. Throughout his career, he has shared the stage with artists such as Diego "El Cigala," Javier Limón, and Concha Buika, and has created his own shows, accompanied by Juan José Suarez "Paquete" and Los Porrina. He has participated in the show "Misa Flamenca" by Tito Losada’s company, the tour "Mi Soledad" by Joaquín Cortés' company, and was an invited artist with the Spanish National Ballet in the show "Leyenda." He has collaborated on albums such as "Picasso en mis ojos" by Diego "El Cigala" and "El Son del Limón" by Javier Limón. Recently, he released his debut solo album, which combines flamenco tradition with a modern approach to singing, featuring collaborations with artists like Diego "El Cigala," "El Piraña," Juan José Suarez "Paquete," Manuel Parrilla, Diego del Morao, Camarón de Pitita, and Sergio Dalma.
Josué Rodríguez “Ronkío”, is a flamenco bassist and producer known for his versatility and talent. The son of flamenco guitarist Luis Rodríguez “Luisillo” and nephew of cantaora Encarna Fernández, he grew up in a musical environment that shaped his training. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with renowned artists such as Concha Buika, Ketama, Josémi Carmona, La Negra, and his own project "Labudú", blending flamenco, jazz, and Latin music. He has toured internationally and performed on prestigious stages like Blue Note and BB King. As a producer, he has worked with musicians like Antonio Serrano, Chano Domínguez, and Rubem Dantas, among others. His ability to blend genres and his mastery of the bass have made him one of the leading flamenco bassists in contemporary music.
Jean-Louis Duzert, born in Villenave-d’Ornon, discovered his passion for photography at a young age. After completing specialized studies in Orthez, he began his career as an official photographer for the government in Paris before joining the Sud-Ouest newspaper, where he worked as a photojournalist from 1973 to 2010. Passionate about flamenco, Duzert has become a key figure in this art form, serving as the official photographer for the Flamenco Festival at the Théâtre de Nîmes and a permanent guest of the Arte Flamenco Festival in Mont-de-Marsan since its inception in 1989. His work has been exhibited in iconic cities such as Seville, Jerez, Lebrija, Madrid, Mont-de-Marsan, Nîmes, Paris, and Bordeaux, among others. He has also published several books dedicated to flamenco, including Arte Flamenco (Festival de Mont-de-Marsan), Flamenco Flamme (Festival de Nîmes), Prohibido el cante (Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art in Seville), Alborea (journal of the Andalusian Flamenco Agency), and most recently, Balada Flamenca, published by Éditions IN8. With an authentic and passionate perspective, Jean-Louis Duzert has immortalized the essence of flamenco, establishing himself as a global reference in documenting this vibrant art form.
Jorge Pardo, a flutist and composer born in Madrid is a prominent musician in today's scene, renowned for his unique fusion of jazz and flamenco. In 2013, he was named Best European Jazz Musician. Trained at the Royal Conservatory of Madrid, Pardo plays the flute and saxophone and has collaborated with legends like Paco de Lucía. Pardo has performed at international festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival and worked with celebrated artists like Chick Corea and Al Di Meola. Winner of Spain’s National Award for Contemporary Music in 2015, his albums like "El Canto de los Guerreros", "Las Cigarras Son Quizá Sordas", "Diez de Paco", and "Vientos Flamencos" showcase his rich artistic journey.
