In a small Andalusian village, two gypsy fathers decide to unite their children, Candela and José, starting from their adolescence. However, a young man named Carmelo, who is secretly in love with Candela, suffers in silence, tormented by the fact that he cannot love her openly. Ten years later, the plan to marry the two children is finally realized. During this time, Carmelo has never stopped loving Candela, but José, who is unfaithful, quickly begins to court Julia, another young woman from the village.
One day, during a violent confrontation between the many suitors of Julia, José is killed. Carmelo, seeing a chance to be with Candela, is suspected of the murder and sentenced to four years in prison. After his release, Carmelo, still in love with Candela, desperately pleads for her to listen to him. But by then, Candela has become possessed by the ghost of José, who haunts her soul, preventing her from opening her heart to Carmelo’s love.
