“Jazz Made In Spain”

On May 9 at 9:00 PM, as part of the Festival Flamenco Nómada, in collaboration with the “One More Time” jazz club and eMa, Antonio Serrano presents “Tootsology”, a tribute to one of the greatest harmonica players in history, Toots Thielemans, through the virtuosity of one of Spain’s greatest harmonica players.

The Festival Flamenco Nómada seeks to create synergies between artists from the flamenco and jazz scenes. For this edition, we are honored to welcome Antonio Serrano, a virtuoso harmonica player and a member of the legendary Paco de Lucía Sextet for 14 years. This exceptional concert takes the audience through Thielemans’ career, from his beginnings in the 1950s to his collaborations with jazz legends, featuring a diverse repertoire that includes jazz classics, Brazilian standards, and key pieces from his extensive body of work.

Through “Tootsology”, Serrano, who embodies Thielemans’ legacy with his expertise and talent, will deliver a performance marked by his deep admiration for this jazz giant. A must-see event for jazz lovers, fusion music enthusiasts, and fans of improvisation.

Antonio Serrano

Antonio Serrano is a virtuoso harmonica player and a pioneer in introducing the harmonica into flamenco. His collaboration with Paco de Lucía’s group (2004–2014) marked a significant turning point in his career. Beyond flamenco, he explores various musical genres such as jazz, classical music, tango, and pop, collaborating with internationally renowned artists.

Among his many accolades are a Latin Grammy (2015), the Masters of Mediterranean Music in Flamenco Jazz from Berklee (2014), the Bernie Bray Award from SPAH (2020), and the San Javier International Jazz Festival Award (2024). As a soloist, he has performed with orchestras worldwide and has premiered original works for harmonica.

Antonio is also a passionate educator, teaching at European conservatories and at Berklee College of Music. His albums, including “Harmonious”, “Tootsology”, and “Bach & ‘Bach”, have received critical acclaim. In 2021, music critic Luis Gago from El País praised him as one of the great geniuses of Spanish music.

Albert Sanz

Albert Sanz, is a unique pianist, known for his lyricism and inventiveness in jazz. Born in Valencia, Spain, Sanz combines a Spanish and South American musical foundation with a deep understanding of Afro-American jazz and European classical traditions. As a composer, he manages to make the old sound new. He has worked with renowned artists such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Perico Sambeat, Jorge Pardo, and Guillermo Klein. Sanz is also an acclaimed leader of his own projects and has released several albums, standing out for his ability to merge different musical influences. In “Tootsology”, he brings his talent to the piano, completing the unique atmosphere that characterizes the tribute to Thielemans.

Toño Miguel

Toño Miguel, is a Spanish double bassist and composer with an international career in the jazz scene. Throughout his career, he has played with great musicians such as Benny Golson, Paquito D’Rivera, and Perico Sambeat. He has also collaborated with renowned flamenco artists like Gerardo Núñez and Carmen Cortés. Miguel is recognized for his rhythmic solidity and his ability to provide a rich and dynamic harmonic foundation in his performances. In “Tootsology”, he will be responsible for providing the harmonic and rhythmic foundation, allowing the musicians to freely explore improvisation.

Esteve Pi

Esteve Pi, is an eminent drummer on the contemporary jazz scene. Born in Falset, Catalonia, Pi began studying drums at an early age and has played with some of the most important musicians in world jazz, such as Johnny Griffin, Phil Woods, and Benny Golson. His style is characterized by great improvisational ability and exceptional rhythmic dynamism. In “Tootsology”, Pi provides a solid rhythmic foundation, allowing the rest of the group to express themselves freely while maintaining the cohesion of the performance.
